The process
“My initial idea was to strip it back and center it around a drum machine instead of a live drumfeel. Tristan has this drum pad by teenage engineering called the K.O. II that has some crazy messed up drum sounds, really easy to push over the edge. I started playing around with it and came up with a backbone for the song, with this distorted over-the-top kick and clap sound that I blended with a more tamed drum patch.
Devon found this really cool sword sample that I ended up using a few times in the song, which just felt right to me.
I came up with an altered chord progression and melody that I really liked, but something was still missing. I felt like a shift was needed in the second verse, and had the brilliant idea to ask Madeline if she would sing verse two. She was open to the idea and laid down the vocal takes in just a few passes, this was the missing piece to my vision for this version. She has such a cool vocal tone and I love how both of our voices blended together.
There’s all sorts of chaos and noise like a subway car roaring by, sword fx and other noises from my voice memos. Yet amongst all this chaos, I find this version to be calming and surreal. I had so much fun producing this track and I’m so happy with how it all came together.“
